We spent the weekend just north of Willow, AK hiking/snow shoeing to a public use cabin with friends. It was quite the experience. When we arrived at the trailhead it was below zero temperatures and around 3:45-4:00pm. It was a race with the sun, we quickly unloaded our trucks, loaded the wood on the sleds, food/water and misc items on another sled. Geared up from head to toe, got the dogs ready and threw on our packs to hit the snow.
We reserved Cabin 1 on Nancy lake. It was about a 2 mile hike in. We followed the signs and arrived at Cabin 2. Exhausted and cold, we stopped for a break and to scout our surroundings. We were a little lost, having missed cabin 1, we attempted to hike the shore of the lake in search for Cabin 1. No luck, the ice was beginning to crack and again the sun was fading away. We put on our head lamps and headed back to Cabin 2. No one was occupying the cabin, so we decided to set up camp in Cabin 2, and try and find Cabin 1 in the morning.
The cabin was frozen solid, we quickly unloaded our firewood. Ryan started the fire in the wood stove, and we got the dogs in and unpacked and warm. It took a little over an hour until the cabin was warm and we were able to take off our gear.
I made stew the night before, so I heated it up and we had a good hearty dinner, lots of water and played card games, listened to music and laughed and chatted. It was now around 10pm, and we saw head lights in the distance out the cabin window, then a knock on the door. It was a couple stating they had rented Cabin 2!
"OH GREAT" we all thought. "We're going to have to pack up all of our stuff and head out". At this point it was around -20 below on the lake. The couple came in warmed up, and they suggested maybe we switch for the night since we're already all unpacked. We were very apologetic. The couple set out towards cabin 1. Feeling bad, Ryan decided to help out and hurried and got all of his snow gear on, as did our good friend Cade. The men assisted the couple to the other cabin! What great husbands Krista and I have! 2 hours later, tired & exhausted from pulling the other couples sleds and hiking through the freezing weather the men were back. We had hot tea, coco and snack ready for them :)
It was a fun trip, night, adventure! We have discovered over the past few years living up here in AK. You need to get outside in the winter time, have fun, and experience it.
Here are a few pictures from what some might call our "Crazy" weekend!!!
